| Germany: Unlike in the United States, an employment relationship may be terminated without notice only for good cause, which is defined and interpreted strictly. To establish good cause, the employer cannot reasonably be expected to continue the employment relationship up to the end of the agreed notice period (e.g., the employee commits a serious breach of contract). The employer must issue confirmation of dismissal without notice to the employee within two weeks from the date when it first has knowledge of the cause. This period cannot be extended. |
